The Weekly Collection #3
What's happening in town? What will happen in restaurants, bars, theatre & music scenes that you want to be there?
Little by little, the trees are freed from their paper box. Ornaments and gifts of every imaginable appear on store shelves. The lights are back in town. And they make it more attractive than any other season. In the agenda, the numbers fall every 24 hours, eagerly wanting to reach the one day for Christmas.
It's still November, but let's not laugh; the above countdown has already started in everyone's mind. It can be seen in the events that are constantly increasing. In the decorated receptions of hotels and restaurants. It shows in our everyday life, where we have already started arranging what we will do during the festive season. And, of course, at our disposal, which has magically begun to persistently seek outings, shows, screenings, food tasting and dancing. Lots of dancing.
In this spirit, we have gathered some of the most robust suggestions to feed your need for a good night out as best you can.
The Thai Restaurant that will make you a Thai lover until you say: Tuk Tuk
Where: Veikou 40, Athens
When: Every day after 17.30
Why: The happy Buddhas who nod their head down in rhythm know. The same thing happens with Thai cooks (even if they know). You can admire the great space from the queue almost always there and nearly all the store operation hours. The masks, the colours, the colourful curtains, the paintings. All this until your table is set and one of the most robust meals you've made in at least the last month is on your list (unless you're a chef, in which case, ok). Then comes the list of -extremely graphic- and everything starts to make you hungry just as the smells compete with each other, for which one will land under your chopsticks.
What do I order? The first thought is EVERYTHING because they are delicious. Another is to catch the fantastic Tom Yam Goong soup if you like prawns. Next, try the Vietnamese Goi Tom Xoai salad (which the cook whips up in a wooden utensil in front of your eyes, so you can also make a powerful story if you're in that mood). Dumplings are also a must-eat, with shrimp or pork and, of course, the Pad Thai, one of the restaurant's most famous - and not justifiably - dishes. If you are in a phase where you want to try something different, then the Thai Boxing chicken will blow your mind with its appropriately spicy sauce; somewhere at this point, we take a minute's silence for the dish that, if you like peanuts, you will bond directly. The dish you shouldn't leave the store without trying: Kaeng Massaman, a curry that breaks the bank. Finally, because you don't expect it, you will eat terrible coconut milk panna cotta and a surprise ingredient (the pandan leaves) that make it green and delicious.
The brunch with a view that every SK deserves: At its Art Lounge Restaurant New Hotel
Where: Filellinon 16, Athens
When: Every weekend 12.00-17.00 (only by reservation at +30 210 3273170)
Social; Instagram
Why: Few people do not want to eat while seeing the beauty of the city from above, and even fewer do not like to enjoy their food knowing flavours that will intrigue their palate. At the brunch of the New Hotel, we meet both, with the executive chef Babis Kountouris making sure that every dish on the menu has something unique to share in a super-designed space that overlooks some of the most beautiful spots in the city. Speaking of the area, from the very entrance to the building, we encounter the emblematic design of the Brazilians Fernando and Humberto Campana in collaboration with architecture students from the University of Thessaly.
But let's move on to our main concern: What you will drink and eat there.
In a menu that satisfies all tastes, you can find excellent smoothies to Bloody Mary options to make lunch as strong as it needs.
For food, Any tips? There are many! One of them is to try the pies (especially the Mykonos fennel pie, which is excellent). If you are a fan of viennoiseries and especially croissants, then make sure the basket is very close to you on the table. Among the unmissable dishes are the steak sandwich and the cayenne eggs with a slice of Kalavryta and synglino (the sauce is magical). Among them is the kale salad. If you are in the testing phase, then definitely try the Baked open-faced sandwich with goat cheese, cranberry compote, and its fantastic super crispy sweet potatoes.
For dessert? Take advantage of the rice pudding. He's an outsider, yes, but you'll thank me later.
The unmissable performance of the week: Aiantas directed by Giorgos Nanouris
Where: At the Alkyonis Theater
When: Friday-Sunday
Why: To see Michalis Sarantis shockingly interpret all nine roles of Sophocles' tragedy while Apostolos Hatzaras paints their figures in front of you. It was a show that, before covid, won the applause and the attention of the theatre audience both for the interpretation of the Horn awardee Michalis Sarantis and for the original direction of Giorgos Nanouris, who we could say holds the sceptre of changing the monologues in the theatrical scene. However, a few other words are to be said about this extraordinary work. In that case, while we are unaccustomed to witnessing a tragedy in a closed theatre, the spectacle is a real surprise worth experiencing. Both for the text translated and edited by the poet Nikos A. Panagiotopoulos and for the interpretations of the protagonists who seem to come from far away in time to tell us about injustice and the honour of being the master of your actions.

The speakeasy for many techno-house nights: Crust Athens
Where: Protogenous 13, Athens
When: Friday and Saturday after 00.00
Why: Walking down the bustling street of Protogenou with shops, the smell of street food pizza (which breaks them) will blow your nose. Logically, you will approach the store (usually, this move is automatic), and suddenly, you will see two queues. One is for those waiting to buy a slice of pizza (FYI, shroom is the best handheld thing ever made) and for those waiting to go down to the basement. At the cellar; Oh yeah, there. Where all the magic happens with guest DJs who do their best set so that we don't stop dancing until the early hours of the morning.
Extra tip: If you want to eat pizza on your way out, ensure you get it beforehand because at 03.00, it stops baking.
The Dream On exhibition: NEON + Hellenic Parliament at the Tobacco Factory
Where: Lenorman 218
When: Wednesday - Sunday 11.00-19.00 / Saturday 12.00 - 20.00
Until when: 27/11
Why: In 18 large-scale installations, the artists John Bock, Helen Chadwick, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Martha Dimitropoulou, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, David Hammons, Thomas Hirschhorn, Damien Hirst, Michael Landy, Maria Loizidou, Paul McCarthy, Annette Messager, Maros Michalakakou. It is worth noting that after the end of the exhibition, the works will be donated to 4 museums in 3 countries on two continents (EMST, TATE, and jointly to the Guggenheim and MCA Chicago). Vegetable heads and credit card shredding machines. A Mercedes covered in straw and a cardboard maze that can keep you captivated for hours in the different phases of Thomas Hirschhorn's life.
Extra Tip: Don't say no to this invitation to tour Thomas's mind; some piece is definitely in there.
Where do I book: The exhibition is free, you will just need to pre-book your seat at NEON | ARTSVP
The movie everyone is talking about right now: The Menu
Where: In the cinemas of the city
When: All week
Why: Fans of the TV series Succession will already be "baked" since Mark Maylod directs it. Speaking of TV series, there will undoubtedly be fans of Anya Taylor Joy, known as Gabby the Queen, who did her thing about two years ago on Netflix. Of course, the love for Ralph Fiennes is constant in most people, cinephiles and not only. The film's story ranges within the framework of the -fantastic- "Triangle of Sadness", commenting in a different, extremely caustic way on the greed of the economically favoured classes.
The concerts of Tiger Lillies at Half Note
Where: Tribonianou 17, Mets
When: 25-28/11
Social; The Tiger Lillies - YouTube
Why: For the nostalgia of your younger years (if you're over 30) and for getting to know the "godfathers" of the Avant-garde if you haven't had the chance to learn/hear/come into contact with this beloved band until now. The Grammy-nominated and Olivier-awarded British cult cabaret band are coming to put us in the mood to meet the great composer Cole Porter and "reintroduce" ourselves to the songs of Edith Piaf.
