“DRILL” by Photographer Lawrence Agyei
Lawrence Agyei, a Ghanaian photographer based in Chicago, has recently showcased his latest work, "DRILL," which celebrates the South Shore Drill Team.
This non-profit organization, located on the south side of Chicago, utilizes performance art to empower young people. Unfortunately, the pandemic disrupted in 2020, leading to the cancellation of the team's performance at the Bud Billiken Parade, the most famous African American parade in the United States, for the first time in 35 years. As COVID-19 restrictions began to ease in 2021, Agyei connected with the team and spent the year capturing their preparations for their highly anticipated return to the parade.
"DRILL" is the outcome of their collaboration, and it was chosen as one of the 2022 Art & Photo Book Awards winners. With Artmobile's support, Agyei could transform his stunning series into a book!
