Alex Grymanis. Photographer
Alex Grymanis is a photographer inspired by nature and city landscapes, with a significant presence in several kinds of commercial photography for clients such as Red Bull etc.
"I get excited when I see the shutter blink and I know I have the photo".
BYO: With one foot in commercial and with the other in street photography;
ALEX: My beginning as a photographer was completely connected to street culture because of my contact with skate. It is a culture that I follow in my daily life whenever my work is definitely quite influenced by it. The commercial part exists but I always try to adapt my personal aesthetics to the commercial projects I undertake.
BYO: Is it something that could be combined? Does Street give content to other forms of commercial or fashion photography?
ALEX: I am inspired by many different types of photography. Photojournalism is one of them. I try my job being a photojournalism point of view, adapted to the requested.
The road, the mountain, the sea and all these experiences that follow a photographer are combined and constitute his work.
BYO: What are your latest projects?
ALEX: We are in a difficult era because of Covid, however, lately, I have done 2 very nice projects for Red Bull. One was in Naxos island with Lennart Neubauer a windsurfing athlete and the other was in Pertouli with the athlete Nikolas Plytas.
BYO: Do you work outside Greece as well? Which place has fascinated in terms of photography but also as a culture?
ALEX: One of the most beautiful countries I have visited is Canada. You see a completely different landscape from what we are used to especially in Europe. That enchants you a lot. Cuba is also the country with the most interesting culture I have visited.
BYO: What can irritate you in a project and what can make your day?
ALEX: Fret with anticipation, excited when I see the shutter open and close and I know I have the picture.
BYO: What are your next project and next steps?
ALEX: I have different things coming up but many of them have been frozen due to the covid situation. I hope that soon things will return to normal so that we can organize everything that has been stagnant.
BYO: What is the most beautiful or the most important thing you have learned through your work?
ALEX: As long as you work, you train. As long as you train, you evolve. This never stops.
BYO: Do you have a favourite image? If so, is it yours or another photographer?
ALEX: All images are very important to me because it is the freezing of a life moment.
BYO: In the city do you always see things as a photographer or just as a passerby?
ALEX: I always see things as a passerby. I prefer to see a place, as seen by everyone who will ever be there.
BYO: What do you like about Athens?
ALEX: It’s an easy-going place. It is my city and I know how to move in it, find what I need. I like that it has the sea, the town and the mountain altogether. It is a very good combination.
BYO: Athens or ...?
ALEX: Travel. Wherever you are, it is very important to travel and see other countries, other peoples and other cultures.
